cliff. president obama and congress are on christmas vacation. it will be thursday before talks resume to try and prevent automatic tax hikes and spending cuts from taking effect january first. andrew spencer has the latest. analysts say many shoppers haven't been in the holiday spirit when it comes to spending money. the four-day black friday weekend that started on thanksgiving was strong. sales rose 2-point-7 percent. but analysts says sales fell 4-point-3 percent for the week ending december 15th. and last week they forecasted holiday spending to decrease another 2-point- 5 percent. previous expectations were for a 3-point-3 percent increase in spending. the saint anthony foundation needs help to reach its goal of collecting 5-hundred hams during the 25th annual curbside donation drive. according to the foundation, they collected a hundred hams. that's just 20-percent of their goal. the foundation hoped to get another 400 hams sunday and today. if you would like to donate a ham you can do so at the drive. located in front of saint anthony's in san francisco's tenderloin area. from

: president obama is rounding up the top four leaders in congress to meet at the white house. senate leaders harry reid and mitch mcconnell will be at that meeting scheduled for about seven hours from now. this could be their last chance to find terms they can all agree to. the president and senate got back to work yesterday. the house of representatives just got the call to return sunday night. a vote has been taken by monday or else automatic income tax increase will kick in on tuesday. republican aid say their leaders might now get on board with that. even so there is economic proof that many americans still fear going over the fiscal cliff. i'll have more on that in my next update. live in washington kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. >>> analysts say if the country goes over the fiscal shift it could send the economy back if into a recession. >>> secretary of state hillary clinton is expected to return to work next week. a specksman for clinton says she continues to recooperate at home. doctors say clinton contracted a stomach virus earlier this month and became dehydrated and fainted.

, president obama quietly signed a executive order that gives a small pay raise to two million federal workers and a small pay raise to all 535 members of congress. they will get an extra $900 each in the forthcoming year starting march 27th. but they get a pay raise. so the people who could not come to an agreement on cutting spending will in fact be spending more on themselves using money which we do not have. heather: speaking of all that spending we are expected to hit the debt ceiling in just hours. another blow to the economy. >> that means that we are about to run out of money and we can not borrow anymore. treasury secretary tim geithner says, well, we'll move some money around so we won't default on our obligations but nonetheless we are out of money. this means if a debt ceiling deal is not included any fiscal cliff deal, and it is not likely to be. gregg: then this debt mess continues for a few months. and we've still got to argue that out in congress between congress and the president. heather: geithner said last thursday, he called them, trort nary measures would have to be taken

they are voting at state level and local level, you will get a different picture. we have a republican congress, a pretty conservative republican congress. people were comfortable voting for those folks. we look at governors, we have 30 republican governors now. so, many of the same people split their vote. they went for barack obama on the national level and when four republicans on local level. it is always more complicated. host: what is the future been like for the republican party? guest: we have no future. haven't you heard? we are done and finished. host: how do they deal on what seal -- guest: do have to argue for your point of view. i do not think we made a good argument at a national level. again, the argument was made effectively at the state level. there are 30 republican governors. that is a pretty big majority. there are a group -- majority of republicans in the house. at the national level, people can talk about whether the messenger was week, whether mitt romney was a great candidate and not. i did not think very many people think it was a great candidate. pit bull think he was
